김창영(b.1957)은 실제 모래를 사용하여 해변에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 모래사장을 매우 사실적으로 그린다. 모래사장의 장면을 재구성한 김창영의 그림에는 모래 가루가 작품의 표면을 채우고 있어 그림이 실물처럼 보이는 착각을 일으킨다. 이러한 일루전 효과는 김창영 작품의 가장 큰 특징이며, 그 바탕에는 현실에서 만질 수 없는 시각만의 세계를 기록하려는 근본적인 목적이 있다. 물 위에 비치는 형상, 하늘의 무지개, 모래의 그림자와 같이 만질 수 없는 현실의 영역을 회화로 소환한 것이다. 눈으로 보고 있지만 몸으로 와서 닿는 김창영의 회화는 시촉각의 응집체로서 현실과 친숙하면서도 현실을 능가하며 우리의 낯선 감각을 깨운다.
