Park Seo-Bo

Park Seo-Bo (1931-2023) was a pioneering figure in Korean abstract art, particularly known for his Dansaekhwa (monochrome painting) style, which emphasizes physical actions, meditation, and contemplation over Western monochrome painting. His works are created through repetitive actions of applying paint to canvas or hanji paper and then drawing or erasing with pencils or other tools before the paint dries. This process, which he describes as an act of emptying the mind, leads to a harmonious unity between the artist and the artwork. His series, created using the Mixographia printmaking technique, vividly displays his distinctive style with raised textures. The series, created in 1994, is particularly significant as it was the first attempt by an Asian artist, showcasing the unique beauty of brief, fragmented brushstrokes.

박서보(1931-2023)는 서양의 모노크롬과 달리 수행과 관조, 신체적 행위에 강조된 ‘단색화(Dansaekhwa)’ 고유의 작품성을 해외에 널리 알린, 한국 현대 추상미술의 선구자이다. 박서보의 단색화는 캔버스나 한지 위를 물감으로 뒤덮고 물감이 마르기 전에 연필이나 다른 도구로 선을 긋고 물감으로 지우는 행위의 반복을 통해 탄생된다. 박서보는 이러한 과정을 마음을 비우는 행위라고 부르며, 무위자연의 상태에 이를 때 진정으로 자신과 그림이 하나가 된다고 말한다. ‘믹소그라피아’ 판화 기법으로 제작된 박서보의 <묘법 Ecriture> 연작은 요철이 두드러진 박서보의 화풍을 더욱 생생하게 보여준다. 특수 수공예 종이에 제작된 믹소그라피아 <묘법>은 길게 뻗어가는 회화의 묘법과 달리 짧게 끊어지는 속필 묘법의 묘미를 보여준다. 믹소그라피아 <묘법>은 박서보가 1994년 렘바 갤러리 판화공방에서 직접 제작하였으며 아시아 작가로는 최초로 시도하여 국내에서 그 의미가 더욱 크다.
