Won Sou-Yeol

Won Sou-Yeol (b.1946), now lives and works in France, draws inspiration from the natural environment of his birthplace, Jeju Island. His works can be divided into three periods: explosive, meditative, and explorative through the open circle motif. The explosive period is characterized by intense, chaotic energy in his paintings. The meditative period reflects his search for forgiveness for his late mother. The open circle period, inspired by the whirling dance of Islamic Sufis, presents simpler compositions that open up a new visual world. Won’s works reveal elements of Abstract Expressionism and Action Painting.

원수열(b.1946)은 프랑스에서 활동하지만 작가가 태어난 제주도의 자연환경, 넓은 대지와 바다에서 영감을 받아 작업을 한다. 원수열의 작업은 분출의 시기, 명상적 시기, 열린 원을 통한 탐구 시기 등 세 시기로 구분된다. 분출의 시기에서 회화는 부서지고, 솟구치고, 깨어지고, 폭발하는 등 화폭을 뒤흔드는 격렬함이 가득하다. 명상적 시기의 회화는 돌아가신 어머니에게 구하는 용서를 표현하는 작품이다. 열린 원을 통한 탐구 시리즈는 이슬람 수도승의 회전하는 춤의 움직임에 영감을 받은 것으로, 기법과 구성에서 더욱 단순하고 새로운 세계를 열어 보인다. 원수열의 작품에서 추상 표현주의와 액션 페인팅의 원리를 발견할 수 있다. 작가는 종종 한스 하르퉁이나 윌렘 드 쿠닝과 비교되기도 하는데, 그는 프란츠 클라인에게서 가장 많은 영향을 받았다. 거칠게 휘몰아치면서 동시에 동양적 정서가 묻어나는 백색의 조화는 뜨거우면서도 차가운 추상의 조형 언어를 함께 보여준다.
