HAN, YOUNG-WOOK

한영욱 개인전, “삶” 알루미늄 판 위에 스크래치로 인물의 생경하고 치밀한 묘사를 통해 휴머니티를 이야기하는 작가 한영욱의 개인전이 9월 5일(목)부터 9월 14일(토)까지 박영덕화랑에서 열린다. 한영욱 작가는 인물의 생경하고 살아 숨쉬는 듯한 묘사를 위해 캔버스와 붓 대신 알루미늄 판과 드릴이나 니들 등의 재질을 사용하여 스크래치 기법으로 그림을 그린다. 소재와 재질 면에서 인물화에 대한 편견을 깨며 국내를 넘어 해외에서까지 작품성과 가능성을 인정받았다. 관람객이 한영욱 작가의 작품에서 시선을 떼지 못하는 또 다른 이유가 있다. 그림 속 인물이 지닌 내면의 따뜻함이다. 큰 화면을 가득 메운 인물의 첫인상에 관람객은 압도당한다. 강인한 인상 덕에 무서움을 느꼈던 관람객은 그림 속 인물의 눈동자를 보면서 내심 긴장했던 마음을 내려놓고 이내 그 속에 보이는 따뜻함과 마주하게 된다. “인간들이 공통적으로 겪은 유한한 생, 거기에서 오는 숙명적인 고독감, 그러나 그 유한함만이 가질 수 있는 생명의 아름다움을 묘출하고자 한다.” - 작가인터뷰 中 이번 전시에서 한영욱 작가는 유한한 인간의 아름다움을 표현하고자 했던 지난 날의 예술적 가치에서 한 발 더 나아가 그가 겪어온 삶, 혹은 그가 아는 사람들이 겪어 온 삶을 그리며, 추상적 개념으로 머물렀던 ‘삶’을 ‘실재(實在)’로 옮겨온 변화된 예술성을 보여주고자 한다. ‘세월의 고독, 삶의 진짜 흔적, 경외감, 연민, 다소 충격적인’ 등의 변화된 수식어로 ‘삶’을 재조명한다. 그간 실재(reality)보다 더욱 ‘실재 같은(real)’ 묘사력으로 관람객의 감탄을 자아냈던 그가, 이제 진짜 실재(literally reality)를 그리고자 한다. 한영욱 작가는 홍익대학교 및 동대학원 회화과를 졸업했다. 2004년 알루미늄 호일 작업을 시작하여 2007년부터 알루미늄 판을 사용해 인물을 그려왔다. 인물의 정확한 묘사를 넘어 그려진 존재의 강렬한 존재적 가치와 내면의 울림을 표현해내며 국내외 굴지의 아트페어 및 미술애호가들의 사랑을 받아왔다. 극사실적인 섬세한 표현으로 호평을 받아 신사임당 미술대전 대상, 단원미술대전 최우수상 및 강원미술대전 대상을 휩쓸며 한국 현대미술을 대표하는 작가로 자리매김해왔으며, 지난 2010년에는 홍콩에서 열린 소더비 홍콩 경매에서 추정치의 5-6배에 달하는 가격에 낙찰되며 아시아를 넘어 세계의 콜렉터들의 관심 대상이 되어왔다.

Young Wook Han LIFE Young Wook Han who is well known for scratching paintings hold his solo exhibition in Galerie Bhak from September 5 to September 14. Young Wook, Han is very first artist who has broken the stereotype with portraits using unique methods and creative ways of working. He draws the figure on the aluminum plate which makes the paintings glittery. And he accurately calculates the reflective effect of the illuminated texture. Therefore, viewers can appreciate the figure’s glittery colors. Every figure in Young Wook, Han’s artwork is always only an ordinary person and every face is different. That’s why Han’s works are special. In addition to this, the figure in his painting is elaborated and portrayed vividly. Its elaboration makes his figure real. He perfectly represents eyebrows, wrinkles, hairs, sweat glands, scars, eyeballs, and skin. Many viewers are surprised and impressed by the portraits which are more realistic that photographs or mirror images. The first impression of his painting is that the figure in the painting is strange but vivid. The title of this show is “Life”. Before this show, the artist has always drawn ordinary people’s faces to tell the beauty of life of human being. In this show, however, he wants to tell the essence of life. So he used the people who are intimate with him including himself as a figure in his work to see the real facet of life. As a result, he realized the life of human being is not only beautiful but rough, lonely, compassionate, and eventually, noble. What is more surprising is that this is the very first time for him to use naked bodies of his friends to express the essence of life. Young Wook Han says: "I draw portraits because of love for people. We the people are suffering from mortality and lonesome fate, but we are expressing the beauty of life." Young Wook Han has drawn the portraits using aluminum plates. In addition to the realistic depiction of the figure, he can express the value of existence of human being. Thanks to his artistic value, he got many of the national Grand awards and has represented the contemporary art in Korea. Besides, Han’s works have been auctioned off at much higher price than original sold-price. One piece of them set a record at Sotheby’s HK. Its hammer price was higher more than five times from the Sotheby’s estimate.
