Han Young Wook (b.1963) received both his bachelor's and master's degrees in painting from Hongik University. Han is known for his unique approach to hyperrealism, creating vivid portraits on aluminum panels. His technique involves scratching the panel with a sharp tool (needle) to sketch, and then applying paint, a process he repeats to produce his portrait and animal works.
Particularly emphasized are details like eyes, skin wrinkles, and hair, not merely for sensory pleasure but to evoke the viewer's emotions and mental energy. Han's paintings bring forth universal emotions and feelings through the depiction of pure emotions in children's and animals' faces, the fleeting beauty in women's faces, and the tranquility and weariness in elderly faces. His large-scale portraits, marked by meticulous detail and expressive quality, create a uniquely realistic yet surreal atmosphere. Han Young Wook’s distinctive visual language has garnered consistent attention both domestically and internationally, including at Art Miami, Art Central Hong Kong, and Art Taipei.
